Material Transfer Agreements

What is a Material Transfer Agreement?

A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a contract that governs the transfer of tangible research materials between two organizations, when the recipient intends to use it for his or her own research purposes. Materials may include cell lines, plasmids, nucleotides, proteins, transgenic animals, plant varieties, bacteria, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals.

What department handles MTA’s and who is authorized to execute them?

If your research project requires a MTA the request should be sent to the Chief Research Officer in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Research Administration. The President has delegated the Chief Research Officer authority to review and sign off on all MTA’s.
