Three University of North Georgia (果冻传媒) students and Dr. Andrew Johnson, director of Multicultural Student Affairs, attended the African American Collegiate Male Summit from Feb. 22-23 in Atlanta, Georgia.

"It was a tremendous opportunity for me and the three students who took advantage of this opportunity. The opportunity to network and learn from professionals in a variety of fields is important for our students," Johnson said. "The African American Male Initiative helps our African American males begin to build a professional network and mentor relationships."

The University System of Georgia's African American Male Initiative sponsored the event held at Georgia Power Corporate Headquarters. Participants heard presentations from African American male managers from companies such as Balfour Beatty and Salesforce. They were able to network with these professionals and also participated in skill-building workshops.

Dan Diasa, a freshman from Flowery Branch, Georgia, pursuing a degree in engineering through the Regents Engineering Transfer Program, appreciated the chance to attend the summit.

"It was a great privilege. People from different companies shared their experiences with us," Diasa said. "They gave us advice about life after college."

Freshman Cleo Johnson, a cadet from Kennesaw, Georgia, pursuing a degree in management with an entrepreneurship concentration, won an "Elevator Pitch" competition hosted by one of the presenters. Johnson said he enjoyed the chance to differentiate himself from the other competitors.

He is a Georgia Military Service Scholarship recipient and member of the Georgia Army National Guard whose goal is to commission as a second lieutenant in the Military Intelligence branch.

"The speakers at the summit talked about interviews, goal-setting and time management," Johnson said. "These things will help us in the future and in our every-day lives."

In addition to Diasa and Johnson, James Booker attended the summit.

The group also got a tour of Truist Park, the home park of the Atlanta Braves.
