Academic Success Coaching

Rachel Y. Johnson, Student: “I became aware of academic coaching when I was, actually, in high school. That’s where I met Miss Whittney.”

Whittney Smith, Academic Success Coach:  “Academic coaching is a way to take what you think you know about being a college student and trying to apply it in a different setting.”

Text: Academic Coaching is a partnership focused on individualized goals and strategies for success.  Academic Success Coaching is provided by professional coaches as well as through the Nighthawk Navigator peer coaching program.

Alvita Milner-Fitzgerald, Academic Success Coach:  “We work with the entire population of students. Anybody is able to come in and meet with a coach.”

Kayli Allen, Nighthawk Navigator Peer Coach: “I think being a college student has really helped me be able to help other students because I am where they are, just a couple of years down the road.  If I have a new student come to me I try to just figure out what they are having problems with and how they need to study, because the approach to each student is going to be different, because everyone’s different.”

Alvita Milner-Fitzgerald: “Most of the time it’s just me asking about what strategies are you implementing now, what’s not working, and we just go from there, taking it one step at a time, making sure that it’s comfortable and that it fits into your schedule.”

Voice-over: “The relationship with your academic coach is probably the most important thing you should be aware of in college.  Without that guidance, it would be a lot more stressful than what it is now.”

Kayli Allen: “I can give a student as many strategies as they want for success but, if there’s not one that works for them, they’re not going to be successful.”

Alvita Milner-Fitzgerald: “It’s just not a cookie-cutter experience.  It’s all about supporting them in their own journey.”

Whittney Smith: “So, if I have a student who is a freshman who has never taken a college class my academic coaching session would be a bit different from, say, if the student was a sophomore and they were three semesters in.  Coaching is specific about tailoring it to what the student needs and bringing it kind of full circle.”

Rachel Johnson: “Not only is academic coaching helping with, like, grades and GPA, but it also helped me decide what I really want to do in my life.”
