Social Security Numbers for International Students & Scholars
In order to accept any employment, you will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) if you do not already have one. To apply, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Confirm that you do have a job on campus. Your supervisor should make you an official offer.
- Print the Employment Verification Form.
- You will complete Section 1, then have your employer/supervisor complete Section 2 of the Employment Verification Form. Both sections must be signed with an original, wet signature.
- Make an appointment with your International Student Advisor after both sections of your Employment Verification Form are completed. Your International Student Advisor will sign Section 3 of the form.
- Once you have completed the Employment Verification Form, you will need to gather the below documents, which the Social Security Administration requires in order to apply for a Social Security Number.

- Completed Employment Verification Form

- Next, complete the online . After following the steps and submitting the application, you should see a green screen that has your Online SSN Application Process (oSSNAP) number. Print this page or take a screenshot of the number with your phone. When visiting the SSA office, you will give this number to the SSA representative, who will then be able to look up your application in the system.
- With the above documents in hand and after completing the online application, you must visit your local . Call ahead to make an appointment or check to see if the office allows walk-ins.
- Before you leave the SSA office, ask for an application receipt. The card containing your Social Security Number will arrive by mail about 10-14 days after you apply.
Note:
- There is no cost to apply for an SSN.
- Wait at least 10 days after you initially enter the US before applying for an SSN in order to give the SSA enough time to access your immigration information in their system.
- All documents you submit at the SSA interview must be original. Photocopies or notarized copies of documents will not be accepted or reviewed.
- Additional suggested items to bring:
- Proof of Residency (any documentation with you name and U.S. mailing address such as a bill or statement)
- Identification such as a 果冻传媒 Student ID card or a Driver’s License
Once you receive your Social Security Number by mail you must complete the following tasks at 果冻传媒:
- Go in person to the Registrar’s Office to update your Student Records with 果冻传媒
- If you are working on-campus at 果冻传媒, provide a copy of your Social Security Card to the Office of Human Resources.
Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number
Be careful with your Social Security card and number. Show your card to your employer when you start a job so your records are correct. Provide your Social Security number to your financial institution(s) for tax reporting purposes. Keep your card and any other document that shows your Social Security number on it in a safe place.
