Learning Support Exemption Criteria

If you need Learning Support, it will be marked in red on your Advising Tranguid in your Banner account. ��ý looks at High School GPA, Accuplacer test, and/or the calculation of the English and Math Placement Index scores, using HSGPA and ACT or SAT scores to see if you need Learning Support. All Learning Support work must be done in your first semester of school, and are designed to be completed in one semester.

Learning Support English

To exempt placement in corequisite Learning Support English (reading/writing), ��ý applicants must meet or exceed at least one of the criteria listed below. Students must:

have transfer or equivalent credit for an Area A English course (must meet ��ý’s minimum grade requirement, which is “C” or higher); or
have a High School Grade Point Average* (HSGPA) of 2.7 or higher AND have completed the Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) in English; or
have an English Placement Index** (EPI) of 4280 or higher; or
score 243 or higher on the Next-Generation Accuplacer Reading Comprehension test AND score 4 or higher on the Accuplacer WritePlacer test.

Note:

HSGPA is calculated based on Required High School Curriculum grades; elective credits often do not apply
The English Placement Index is a derived by the USG, using a student’s HSGPA and ACT or SAT scores

Students who do not meet any of these criteria will be required to take ENGL 0999 (Support for English Composition) paired with ENGL 1101 (English Composition). Exemption from or placement into Learning Support English will be based on these measures:

Learning Support Math

To exempt placement in corequisite Learning Support Math, ��ý applicants must meet or exceed at least one of the criteria listed below. Students must:

have transfer or equivalent credit for an Area A mathematics course* (must meet ��ý’s minimum grade requirement, which is “D” or higher); or
have a High School Grade Point Average** (HSGPA) of 3.2 or higher AND have completed the Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) in Mathematics; or
have a Mathematics Placement Index ***(MPI) of 1300 or higher; or
score 266 or higher on the Next-Generation Accuplacer Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QRAS) test.

Students who do not meet any of these criteria will not be permitted to take MATH 1111, College Algebra, as a stand-alone math either as a pre-requisite for a higher-level math or to satisfy their Area A math requirement. NOTE: Not all majors require MATH 1111. Exemption from or placement into Learning Support Math will be based on these measures:

Students wishing to take MATH 1111 who do not receive initial placement into MATH 1111 with or without Learning Support (MATH 0999) must first take the math into which they placed. Upon successful completion of MATH 1001 or MATH 1101 with a grade of “C” or higher, they will be eligible to enroll in MATH 1111 without corequisite Learning Support instruction (without MATH 0999).

*Corequisite Learning Support courses: ENGL 0999+ENGL1101; MATH 0997+MATH 1001; MATH 0998+MATH 1101; and MATH 0999+MATH 1111 are two courses taken in the same semester. Learning Support requirements are considered satisfied upon successful completion of the credit-bearing (college-level) course. Attendance, active participation, and submission of coursework are required in both components of Corequisite Learning Support instruction.

Students who need MATH 1111 or higher for their degree program and whose placement in Learning Support math is MATH 0997/MATH 1001 or MATH 0998/MATH 1101 must successfully earn a grade of C or higher in the credit-bearing (college-level) math course, and they will then be permitted to take MATH 1111, College Algebra, as a stand-alone math course.
