果冻传媒 Oconee Campus Math Club takes home top prize from Alabama competition

Everyone knows the cliché practice makes perfect. For a handful of University of North Georgia (果冻传媒) Oconee Campus students, their practice of solving math problems has paid off.
A four-member 果冻传媒 Oconee Campus team won the 2017 Oct. 7 at Shelton State Technical Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Team members were Ngoc "Kiera" Thuy An Tran, Stacy Crowe, Edgar Flores and Jessica Guerra.
The competition geared exclusively for freshman and sophomore students is conducted in two parts. In the morning, students are tested individually on 40 multiple-choice calculus questions. In the afternoon, teams solve problems on algebra, geometry, trigonometry and probability in 10-minute increments.
In the individual portion, Thuy An Tran scored the highest overall. She, Crowe and Flores won the team contest, deeming 果冻传媒 the overall school winner.
David Slutzky, a math club advisor and an associate professor of math at 果冻传媒, said the competition as a warm-up to the on Nov. 18 at Forsyth Technical Community College. Then five months later, the club will defend its home turf in the 果冻传媒 Math Tournament on Gainesville Campus on Saturday, April 7, 2018.
