Advising Expectations

Academic advising assists students in constructing meaningful educational plans based on their interests and strengths and in line with each student’s academic, professional, and personal aspirations. Academic Advising fosters the development of students who are self-directed, responsible decision makers and supports the successful completion of degree requirements.

An Advisor is Expected to:

  • Be available, approachable, and respectful of students
  • Encourage and support students as they develop realistic goals and attainable educational plans
  • Have a thorough understanding of 果冻传媒’s core curriculum, institutional requirements, and degree requirements. 
  • Be efficient and accurate when discussing degree requirements with advisees
  • Assist students in developing decision-making skills and encourage them to accept responsibility for their choices
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Be knowledgeable about campus resources, support services, and opportunities; referring students as needed

An Advisee is Expected to:

  • Be respectful of their advisor
  • Schedule appointments with their advisor and be on time
  • Come prepared for appointments by becoming familiar with the 果冻传媒 Catalog, core curriculum, and program of study for their major
  • Check 果冻传媒 email regularly and become familiar with Banner
  • Ask questions
  • Familiarize themselves with the academic calendar and be aware of important deadlines, such as advisement and withdrawal
  • Accept responsibility for their decisions

First Year Goals:

  1. Meet with your advisor early in the semester to talk about your goals and plan your classes for next semester. You don't need to wait for Advising Weeks!
  2. Check your 果冻传媒 email every day.
  3. Use campus resources like tutoring, the Writing Center, and math lab to do your best in classes.
  4. Visit Career Services to learn about jobs that match what you like and are good at.
  5. Know what classes you need for your degree and follow 果冻传媒 rules.
  6. Understand how your classes fit into your degree plan. Keep your plan up-to-date.
  7. Focus on finishing your first-year classes.
  8. Try out classes in your chosen field.
  9. Remember important dates like when you can add or drop classes.
  10. Sign up for classes early so you can get the ones you want.
  11. Get to know your professors.
  12. If you're interested, ask about studying abroad, internships, or research.

What Students can Learn from Academic Advising:

  1. Understand why the Core Curriculum matters and choose classes that fit those requirements.
  2. Know what classes you need for your degree and pick the right ones each semester to stay on track.
  3. Get how 果冻传媒 rules affect your education and follow them to keep progressing.
  4. Use technology to help plan your classes and register for them.
  5. Choose a major that matches your interests, skills, and career goals.
  6. Learn about campus resources that can help you with your academic, personal, and career goals.
  7. Recognize the benefits of getting involved in clubs and other activities outside of class.
  8. Understand the process if you're transferring to another school.

About Advisor Appointments and Office Hours

  • Your advisor’s name and contact information can be found on your Tranguid in Banner.
  • There is also a link next to the advisor name listed on your Tranguid where you can schedule an appointment.
  • Or, make an appointment directly using the booking system at 
  • If your advisor does not use the online appointment booking system, you can still send an
    email requesting an appointment.

How to prepare:

  • Be aware of any holds on your account.
  • Review your program requirements and record your progress on your plan of study before your meeting.
  • Bring all important documents with you, including your plan of study, and be prepared with any questions and/or concerns you have about your progress
  • Be on time for your appointment. If you are unable to attend the appointment, cancel and
    reschedule. 
  • If you are more than five minutes late for an appointment, or come without your
    completed Plan of Study (if applicable), you will be asked to reschedule.
