Project GO is an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office. This scholarship is aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers. Sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education, Project GO provides institutional grants to U.S. institutions of higher education with large ROTC student enrollments, to include the senior military colleges'

¹û¶³´«Ã½ has been a Project GO institution since 2008.

The Department of Defense has designated some languages as “strategic” because of the national need for trained speakers in those languages. These languages are also critical for U.S. national security and economic competitiveness.

Project GO supports programs in the following languages:

• Arabic
• Hindi
• Indonesian
• Japanese
• Korean
• Mandarin Chinese
• Pashto
• Persian (Dari, Farsi, Tajik)
• Portuguese
• Russian
• Swahili
• Turkish
• Urdu
• Uzbek

The University of North Georgia offers the following languages:

• Arabic
• Chinese
• Japanese
• Korean
• Russian

There are many benefits to participating in Project GO language programs, including:

• Improving language proficiency
• Qualifying for language proficiency bonus pay
• Opening pathways to new career opportunities that require language and area studies
• Earning university credits and fulfilling language requirements

You do not need language experience to apply for the Project GO scholarship, however, your language experience will determine which programs you are eligible to attend.

¹û¶³´«Ã½’s program requirements are listed below:

• Summer Language Institute (Domestic program) requires no previous language experience.
• Summer Study Abroad requirements vary per language. However, most require at least 2 semesters, or the equivalent (1001, 1002, 2001, 2002) of the language completed prior to the start of the program.
• Semester Study Abroad minimum requirements depend on the program and language. Please contact the Project GO office for more information.

Yes, if you are awarded funding through ¹û¶³´«Ã½’s Project GO program, you will need to apply for admission to ¹û¶³´«Ã½ as a transient cadet.

Yes, we encourage you to apply for the Project GO Domestic scholarship to attend the Summer Language Institute (SLI) program.

Yes, for domestic programs apply as usual. For study abroad programs, if awarded Project GO, you will need to go into inactive non-drilling status in order to participate in an overseas Project GO program.

Yes, you will earn 8 foreign language credit hours during SLI. If you attend a study abroad program, you will earn up to 12 credit hours.

Yes, your application requires a letter from your home institution stating that they will accept the credits earned.

Yes, if you are not originally accepted and are not declined, you will be added to our waitlist. This means that is additional funding becomes available, your application will be re-evaluated and you have the potential to be granted a scholarship.

Project GO scholarships provide funding to students, including tuition, food and housing, textbooks, visas, insurance, and travel expenses to and from the study destination. Please check with the program coordinator to confirm the out of pocket costs that you are responsible for covering.

Funding will be distributed by the financial aid office.

Semester program funding is available, however the amount awarded depends on the program. If the program is costs more to attend than attending ¹û¶³´«Ã½, the difference in cost is awarded. If the program is less expensive than attending ¹û¶³´«Ã½, funding is not awarded.

No, participation in a summer language program on a Project GO scholarship does not require any additional service commitments nor will it adversely affect your ROTC scholarship in any way.

Please note: using ROTC scholarships for funding summer studies may require extension of service but Project GO scholarships will not (please check your service policies).

Yes, you are eligible to receive funding more than once.

The Army CULP is a separate program from Project GO. Project GO funded summer studies can be done in addition to other summer service-specific training and deployments.
