Internships in Communication & Film
Our internship is typically a one-semester work experience highly related to your major. Internships are a short-term work experience that connects academic coursework to careers, allows you to gain entry level experience in a field of interest, and allow you to add a valuable experience to your resume. Academic credit may be rewarded for completing an internship, and internships can be paid or unpaid. The search for an internship can be just as time-consuming as the search for a full-time position, so be sure to start early and use all of your resources.
Who is Involved in an Internship?
- Student: You must have completed 48 credit hours and have at least a 2.5 GPA
- Internship provider: Provides a real world, professional learning environment and the opportunity for you to use your academic skills
- Site supervisor: Direct point of contact who will be supervising you during your time in the internship
- Internship coordinator/faculty internship instructor: Point of contact for all parties, maintains contact and acts as support during the semester
How Can You Receive Academic Credit for an Internship?
- You can begin by exploring internships and learning what is available through community networking on your own, or you can use resources, such as Handshake, provided by our Career Services.
- As a department, we also will send internship opportunities directly to students through email as we receive them from local companies and employers.
- Once you know who your internship provider will be you can begin to complete an Internship Learning Agreement and begin contacting the appropriate Internship coordinator below.
- Once that is completed, and signed off by your internship coordinator, you will be registered by the department for the appropriate course to fit the number of credits you will be receiving for the internship.
How many credit hours can you receive?
The credit hours received for an internship are determined by the average number of hours per week that you will be working for fall or spring terms. For summer terms, first & second terms/sessions, and maymester terms, the number of required hours may be increased accordingly, due to the abbreviated time frame of the session/term. Internship courses may be repeated for up to 6 total hours.
- 1 Credit - fewer than 7 hours per week
- 2 Credits – average of between 7-12 hours per week
- 3 Credits - average of between 13-20 hours per week
