Blue Ridge Rifles Video Transcript
On June 16th, 1861 the city of Dahlonega sent their second group of volunteers to the battlefront in the War between the States. The unit from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Northern Georgia was organized as Company E, Phillips Legion and was called the Blue Ridge Rifles.
In 1950, a drill team was formed at North Georgia College for use in spring parades. This team was named honor platoon. Later, Dr. Brown of North Georgia English Department suggested the name Blue Ridge Rifles in honor of the original unit of Dahlonega.
The team adopted this name as a tribute to the historical unit.
Today, the Blue Ridge Rifles represent the University of North Georgia and the Boars Head Brigade, both in competition and military ceremonies.
